A vacancy exists in the Department of Recreation and Parks for an Activity Coordinator.

Examples of Duties

Job Purpose
Under close supervision, is responsible for the direct leadership of a wide variety of recreation programs, activities, and special events.

Examples of Essential Duties
  • Assists in the creation, planning, implementation, scheduling, promotion, and coordination of a variety of recreation programs, activities, and special events, both indoor and outdoor.
  • Plans and leads diversified programs and activities in the following categories: performing and cultural arts, sports, fitness, social, and hobbies.
  • Works collaboratively across all divisions of the Department, supporting all programming, including but not limited to Special Events, Summer Camps, Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation Activity Centers, and Nature Environmental Agricultural Programming.
  • Recruits, trains, and coordinates the work of part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Meets with community recreation staff, school administrators, and local residents to determine recreational needs.
  • Inspects facilities to make certain that structures, areas, and equipment are safe, adequate, and functioning properly.
  • Ensures facilities are ready for programming, which may include setup or initial field layout, maintaining athletic field lines (e.g., soccer, football, lacrosse), and preparing ball diamonds.
  • Prepares program statistical reports.
  • Responsible for creating programming budgets and tracking expenses.
  • Enter programs and permits into the registration software: CivicRec.
  • Work hours and weekly schedule vary week to week, weekends, and seasonally. Work hours may include some holidays.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience
Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent;
Plus
Two years' successful experience as a playground leader, recreation leader, recreation specialist, teacher, or worker in a closely allied field.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Entry Level)
  • Knowledge of the organization of leagues, clubs, tournaments, programs, exhibits, demonstrations, and entertainment.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and theory of programming recreational and leisure activities.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of community recreation.
  • Knowledge of first aid.
  • Skill in at least three of the following types of activities: athletics, dramatics, storytelling, low-organized games, social recreation, informal discussion, nature study, music, handicrafts
  • Skill in an appreciation of activities conducted by Recreation and Parks to develop a well-balanced, diversified program.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to secure the effective use of volunteer leaders.
  • Ability to recruit, supervise, and train staff.
  • Ability to recruit, train, and guide volunteers.
  • Ability to assist in the planning, organizing, and supervising of recreation and parks programs for a region.
  • Ability to lead program preparation and setup, which may include facility setup or initial field layout, maintaining athletic field lines (e.g., soccer, football, lacrosse), and preparing ball diamonds.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

Conditions of Employment

Physical and Environmental Conditions:
The work of this classification entails some physical labor including walking over rough and uneven surfaces in the inspection of facilities and grounds, and some lifting and carrying of items.


The work entails travel to recreation and park sites, facilities, and meetings throughout the County.

Employees in this classification may be assigned to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Salary

Annual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance
General Increases - Cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated.
Longevity Increases - In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.
